There are cities where things are getting better. And then there are some where things are getting worse. I can imagine Bangalore is in the latter category, simply because it is nothing but a cash cow for the state government to make a lot of money. Infrastructure, for example, is not on the agenda.

Then there are other cities like Hyderabad and Delhi where at least the infrastructure is getting better.

Of course, you can't change culture or even attempt to think its your responsibility. People in Delhi will continue to be rude the same way People in Chennai might discriminate against North Indians.

@Karthik Ayyar As I mentioned in the above comment, I don't aspire to be Mother Theresa. It's a congenital defect. I seem to just want to build a hosted help desk software...I don't aspire to be the change agent.

@sachin - @sridhar vembu has nailed it. Here's his line: The “moral suffering” comes from feeling impotent in the face of these problems.

@Brajeshwar Thanks!

@Sushrut The smaller cities have their own problems. The problems of cities are not going to be contained forever. They spread...

@Kp I agree...I relate to you...

@Supreeth I don't have numbers. I don't need numbers. I feel. The sensory rape that I go through makes me interpret situations. Not graphs and numbers.

@Jason Glad to see your comment. This feeling is typically beyond a westener's grasp. I am sure your stay in Philippines has helped you understand a lot about the oriental people, their cultures and sufferings!

@Suresh I may have sounded a bit cynical in this post; I haven't lost hope

@CrazyGy I am interested in solving problems, but at a different plane. I have my own apprehensions about acquiring abilities to solve the problems of the society. Probably it is congenital...

@naveen culture? Lot of factors. Probably culture is one of them...Who knows...

I am pleasantly surprised to know that so many people share my feelings. I am very late here because I went offline after publishing this; didn't expect so many of you to comment here! Glad I am not alone.

I should thank @Sridhar Vembu for his detailed comments - both here and HN. It is as if he has read my mind. Also, the broader explanation for this resonance is that the upper middle class educated Indian thinking is largely homogenous.

Goddamn.

That photo of Bellandur lake absolutely freaks me out. I live on the lake's banks. Literally. My apartment is where the road ends. I can see the lake from my apartment and I can smell the sh*t from here.

Entrepreneur here, who relocated to Bangalore a month ago (startup is 3 years old).

Very well written. Here is the thing about "douche". If you aren't a "douche", you don't get shit done in Bangalore. My first two weeks in Bangalore was one of constant suffering. I was scammed and cheated constantly since I was polite to a fault (think Croma store, after spend Rs. 1 lakh, will con you).

I turned on my inner douche about 2 weeks ago. I don't request, I shout and yell. I don't respect people, I demand things done - and shit, it works. A new fridge that was delivered broken by Croma was not fixed for 10 days. I showed up during peak visitor time and created a scene and shouted at the top of my lungs - I got a new fridge the next day.

Hired a driver - who took me for granted early on, turned on the douche mode, he is back to his polite self.

Being a douche is not "cool" - it is a necessity.
