Something not so google about Orkut

with 9 comments

Orkut is undeniably the biggest and the most used social network in India. But slowly the Facebook fad is catching up here for many reasons- their cool apps, the privacy settings, the american population etc etc., Also, am really not sure how the apps on orkut are faring. I have not received feeds from friends on them adding or using apps or for that matter even invitations for apps. If thats not the case, am not sure how users are supposed to discover apps on Orkut. And sad enough when I visit friends profiles, it takes so long for the applications to load that, by the time it happens I am done with my job there and long gone!

To top all this, I see lot of google ads for Orkut which invariably have irrelevant ad description. If I am not wrong this is the first time I see google advertising for its own product and worst still is the fact that the ads grossly lack class!

To many of us, Google has meant class and zen which they definitely have across all their products. Well in my opinion the first exception is Orkut. There is a strong possibility of Orkut losing out to Facebook in the SNS game which is right now the biggest wave on internet

Personally this is the first slip I have seen from Google!

  1. Yeah.. right.

I’ve almost moved to facebook. Orkut was good, once, when it was classic. But I hate the poor security…

Facebook, as I read in an article somewhere back last year, is indeed a platform like PC in itself.
The development of apps is also supercool, full-proof (almost).. which is why its been doing better and better.

  2. Yaa surely Orkut guys are not able to handle this apps thing for sure. They started all this because they were forced into this by facebook but I must say they have failed till now in this.

Now its such a pain when you visit your friend’s profile. It takes hell lot of time even on my lappy 3 GHz and 3 Gb RAM. What the hell if i am a orkut user from internet cafe.

Apart from that I didn’t really liked the apps so much on orkut. Apart from one or two out there, others dont have a class. Most seems like a copy of things from facebook. Photo tagging is another thing orkut recently had to inject because of facebook.

So when one website is in a state (facebook) that it starts forcing the other (orkut) to make changes and live up in the market, its clear that its bbye time for the 2nd one (specially if they r unable to handle things).

Recently I have started getting do nuts page too.

  3. Yeah, true most apps lack class. Minglebox has an app on Orkut. Thats some sign of desperation from both ends!

It would be good if Google integrates Blogger with Orkut. That can get people to spend more time there, checking out friends blogs. In a way blog is more of an identity than apps

  6. Thank you for this post, now ill go on this blog often and check for new articles.

  7. I see a hint of desperation on google’s side when i see ads getting displayed on youtube (which were previously collapsible) instead of “related videos”.. Its kind of nice to see someone out there intimidating the big fish :)
