I was complelled to express my views on the ubiquitous “Whats in it for me†syndrome after a hot discussion at Barcamp on why one should go that extra mile or extend that goodwill gesture to somebody without immediate returns. All expectations are fair. Afterall we live in Ayn Rand’s world where selfishness is considered a virtue.
As one would agree, the quickest reply from anybody, as to what one learns in a Barcamp or any similar event would be “Learning and Networkingâ€. I feel most of us are pretty shortsighted while trying to define “networking†or gauging the rewards of networking. It would be utterly foolish for somebody to count on a person as his/her network if all he can do is to quip “You should be ‘so and so’ and we met in the last conference too!!†. A strong business network cannot be established unless there is some level of symbiosis and symbiosis cannot be established unless one decides to extend ones hands. No relationship is worth anything unless there is some investment in terms of time and energy. One also has to understand that rewards of networking are not always immediate and direct. As we all know it’s a small world and it takes time sometimes for the good word to reach the right ears and the rewards to follow.
